update for 2008

i haven't posted anything in so long! i thought i'd give this another go - i'm trying to train my body to the night float schedule again so i'm staying up late. besides, i'm pretty sure no one reads this anymore, so what the hey. i guess i'm just tired of seeing how much i hate micu when i log on my page.

what's new?

we live in alexandria now - in a gorgeous place that we own! by we, i mean mostly the bank, then my in-laws, then us, but hey...it's in our name!

i have a nephew!

my newest favorite game is super mario galaxy. mostly i'm player 2 and i just help collect star bits, but it's so cute - and i just smile when my favorite old-school mario songs come on.

halfway done with residency! so does this mean i know half the stuff i'll need to know by the time i finish? if so i'm terribly behind.

i'm turing 28 this year, and it's pretty depressing that by the time i finish all my training, i'll be 33. damn i'm old. and this old fart can't stay up any later, so good night! happy 2008 everyone, come say hi on facebook, or come visit me at my new house =).

first day of micu, and i already hate it. i hate critical care, i hate pulmonology, i hate vents. i hate sick patients, i hate the intensity of the intensive care unit. i hate ARDS, i hate sepsis,  i hate it all. i thought last month on ID wards couldn't get any worse, but this is going to be the longest month despite it being the shortest month. the bright side: after this month i get vacation!! then no call until june! please let it not be too bad.

update on life in general: i love being married! it's so much fun i can't believe we didn't get married sooner! we're also looking into buying a condo or townhouse here in VA, but that's depressing because of how expensive real estate here still is. that's about it, boring life: work, sleep, househunt.

anyone have the treo that cingular has? any good?

First Annual Intern Skip Day!

all the interns were told we had a mandatory meeting with our chief of medicine today from 9-2, and that our residents would be covering us during that time. after our usual bit from the program director about interns being tired, depressed, etc, he then announced that it was intern skip day! mandatory activities included bowling at lucky strike paid for by the dept of medicine, and then lunch at zengo's courtesy of drug rep. if only every tuesday could be intern skip day.

yay for vacation and GI elective!

please tell me if i'm violating HIPPA here.

today, i was admitting a patient with angioedema and a pH of 7.1 to the IMC (i personally thought she needed ICU monitoring, but i'm just an intern and it's not my decision). as i took her chart and began to look through it, the respiratory therapist comes up and tells me that her latest ABG was pretty much unchanged and do i want to intubate. what the heck do i know about who needs to be intubated? sure sounds like it, with awful repeat gases and a tongue the size of a grapefruit, right? so i call my resident, and he doesn't want to intubate.

anyhoo, long story short i ended up calling anesthesia for stat intubation. after that was all done, i was walking with the patient over to the ICU. in the middle of the hallway, the nurse says, hold on, this looks like vtach. they look at me, and what the heck do i know about running codes? so i was like...ummm check the wires, while i check to see if she has a pulse. luckily she had a pulse, and she was being bagged, so i said guys, you do not want her to code with just me in this hallway, let's pick it up. so we RAN RAN RAN to the ICU, bumping walls, trashcans, random people, anything in our way.

that's it, pretty boring story, but not a boring night.

currently husband is trying to fix his ghetto version of tivo, so i have no tv to watch. thank goodness for tomorrow! day off! yay!!

maybe i'll go test driving again. why does everyone hate the volvo? i think it's cute, plus it's got the T5 engine plus it's AWD.
